Cellar Master: Michele DiPietro
There was one question we just couldn't help asking Michele DiPietro, Kansas City Prime's new sommelier. So we asked it. If Derek Davis was a bottle of wine, which one would he be? The answer in a moment, but first, what is a sommelier, anyway? I mean, you may have the notion that a sommelier actually receives a paycheck for tasting wine. Well, that's part of it. "In the afternoon I taste wine and talk to my purveyors," says DiPietro, a South Philly native, who, in five months, has added about 80 new selections to Kansas City Prime's wine list. "There are new wines on the list every week." A list she is looking to increase from 160 to about 400 wines. Dig This: The History of Vodka
Get back to where it all started with Derek Davis as he hosts another one of Sonoma's Famous Vodka Dinners. Enjoy a three-course meal (each dish including vodka as an ingredient), a vodka tasting, and talk with Derek about-what else-vodka! This year's theme: The History of Vodka. Dinner starts with refried risotto and smoked salmon in a blood orange vodka infusion, with salmon caviar and chives. Next, enjoy ostrich marinated with juniper berry and pepper vodka, served with blackberry gastrique, broccoli rabe and polenta. For dessert: Derek's Mother's Harvey Walbanger Cake. "The wine cellar will contain a table that can seat up to 12 people and they'll be surrounded by stored bottles of wine." On Thursday, October 18, the Philadelphia Chapter of Wine Brats and Arroyo Grille had a massive wine tasting to raise money for the families of the firefighters who were injured or killed in the World Trade Center disaster on Tuesday, September 11th.
